Welcome to The Diggins:
A living folk music tradition
Both a California State Park and a National Historic Landmark District, the Gold Rush town of Columbia retains its historic character both in its architecture and in the traditions of the people who live there.
Columbia not only has the largest existing collection of Gold Rush era structures in the state, it is also home to a living folk music tradition as old as the town itself.
Gatherings involving music continue to be how people in Columbia connect to place and each other.
In this 4-part audio documentary, we’ll talk about this music and the role it has played in maintaining the lifestyle, customs and traditions of this small rural community.
